Bio
My recent paintings elaborate a direct observation of the
Maine woods. Decaying plant life, pine needles, fungi and fauna
articulate in microcosm Mother Nature in all her intimate glory: as Sir
Albert Howard, founder of the organic farming movement, describes it,
“her cycle of life.”
I have always looked to nature for inspiration, but rarely
from such an intimate vantage point. Derived from sketches, photographs
and/or from memory, my interpretations are ultimately collective.
These microcosm images offer insight into the development of
my continually evolving artistic sensibility; my immediate approach
takes into consideration how similar subject matter may be interpreted
relative to my own differing objectives.
The “pine needle” images are of a series of ten (60” x 60”)
paintings on which I am currently working. They express my love of mark
making, a process of scratching into the surface of the underpainting
and then over which I apply traditional glazes. The result is the
illusion of a lush, pine-laden forest floor, timeless not only in its
biological structure but in its formal relationships as well.
